Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) requires that individuals in certain medical professions undergo background screening before they can obtain a license. An AHCA background screening involves checking both statewide and national records.

AHCA background screenings are an effective way to protect patients in medical treatment facilities across Florida. We are a leader in performing background checks, thus helping to promote patient safety while also assisting health care facilities with the hiring process.

Who Needs a Background Screening?

Section 943.0525 of the Florida Code list the professions that require an AHCA background screening. They include most licensed medical professionals that provide “direct care or services or have access to client property, funds or living areas”. Mental health care volunteers must undergo an AHCA background screening unless they work less than 10 hours per month. Hospice care volunteers must also be screened if they provide direct care to patients. Individuals who oversee mental health training programs for students must undergo background screening as well.


Applicants must agree to have their criminal history researched and submit to fingerprinting to receive a rating of “eligible” on an AHCA background screening. First, criminal records will be checked against a database of statewide records by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). Then, the AHCA fingerprinting samples will be submitted to the FBI to be checked against a nationwide database. The FBI will also check criminal records to see if an applicant has previously been arrested in another state.

Photo Option

The Agency for Healthcare Administration has now offered to retain the fingerprint and background check records of those who submit fingerprints with a photo attached. We are one of the few providers in the state equipped with the hardware and software to offer this service.

Mobile Fingerprinting

A mobile AHCA background screening can be a convenient way to ensure that background checks and fingerprinting for large groups are completed in a timely manner, while also making it convenient for applicants to complete this task.

We will bring our equipment into classrooms or offices in order to facilitate the process and are often able to perform this service at the same cost as our non-mobile service.
